SaltWiki[edit]

DFG Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft

SaltWiki, an Internet-based, editorially-managed information structure along the lines of the Internet encyclopaedia Wikipedia, provides information on the following subjects:

  • Salts
  • Damage caused by salts
  • Dealing with salt damage

The Wiki consists of three areas:

  • The two Wikis with articles in English (www.saltwiki.net) and in German (www.salzwiki.de) on salt-based damages have been written by registered specialists and improved by all users via the discussion pages. The Wiki provides an information platform for a better understanding of the topics, thus contributing to the development of appropriate conservation methodologies.
  • In the repository you can find, for example, analysis data, physical and chemical constants, and also graphics, photos, short videos and unpublished literature. The use of the Digital Object Identifier provides a permanent and reliable means of citing deposited data, that is as serious as references to printed literature. videos and unpublished literature.

Between February 2009 and February 2012, support from the German Research Foundation has made it possible for this to be carried out at the Hornemann Institute[1] of the HAWK[2] (University of Applied Sciences and Arts) in Hildesheim, Germany. Become a SaltWiki author or a member of the research network. Save your scientific data and take advantage of other datasets in the repository. If you have comments to make on particular pages, please log in and write your comments directly on the discussion page that is located on each SaltWiki page. If you have any general questions about SaltWiki or comments, please get in touch with us.

SaltWiki and the German SalzWiki are independently developed. The aim is to keep the content of both on the same level but nevertheless you may find in the other Wiki sometimes more likely what you are looking for. Please note that due to the software there may be a different graphical representation.

Please, notice that all the articles have authors who have to be mentioned, e. g.:
Heritage, Adrian; Sawdy-Heritage, Alison; Schwarz, Hans-Jürgen; Wendler, Eberhard: Preventive Conservation. In: Saltwiki, ed. by A. Elena Charola, HAWK Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaft und Kunst Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen (13.06.2015)

Research Network[edit]

In recent decades, extensive knowledge has been acquired, particularly through supported projects of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), which is only partially reflected in the literature. From this starting position, the idea of creating this technical Wiki was developed in a workshop of the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (Federal Environmental Foundation) in February 2008, which was attended by experts in conservation sciences from Denmark, England, Switzerland and Germany. The experts decided to bring into being a modern platform for knowledge management on the Internet that would offer simple and rapid access to knowledge from the widest range of technical disciplines on the maintenance of cultural assets endangered by salts.

SaltWiki is based on the scientific skills of the research network which comprises renowned scientists from academia, research institutes, state offices for the protection of historical monuments, companies, etc.

Dr. Angela Weyer, head of the Hornemann Institute was responsible for the project, the project coordinator was Dr. Hans-Jürgen Schwarz. More project staff of the HAWK: Prof. Dipl.-Rest. (FH) Nicole Riedl, Barbara Hentschel MA, Dipl.-Ing. Gunnar Werner, Dipl.-Des. Carolin Taebel, Sandra Leithauser BA, Susanne Nitschel, Alexander Risos, Friederike Seidler BA, Marina Terwald

Current partners in the research network are:

Dr. Michael Auras, Institut für Steinkonservierung e.V., Mainz

If you are interested in joining the research network, whether as a single person or an institute, you are very welcome to do so.
