Introduction

Damages caused by salts are among the most common and strongest processes that cause damage to historic buildings of stone and brick, on mortars and especially on wall paintings. To understand what these are salts, how they react with water in different climates, is crucial in order to take effective measures. Also important is to know the origin of the salts or of the salt-forming ions, because only if the origin is known, sustained action can be initiated.
