SaltWiki deals with damage caused by salts in historic objects and buildings. It has been developed by conservation scientists and contains contributions from internationally renown specialists.
Our aim is to provide an information platform for education, discussion and networking to conservators, conservation scientists, students and everyone interested in the subject.

The main subjects are:
* Salts- data about their chemical and physical structure
* Damage caused by salts- to historic objects and buildings
* Dealing with salt damage- remedial conservation, analysis, case studies
SaltWiki is an  Internet-based, [[Editorial_Board|editorially-managed]] information website and has a similar structure to the internet encyclopedia Wikipedia.
The Wiki consists of three areas:
* The two Wikis with articles in English (www.saltwiki.net) and in German (www.salzwiki.de) on salt-based damages have been written by registered specialists and improved by all users via the discussion pages. The Wiki provides an information platform for a better understanding of the topics, thus contributing to the development of appropriate conservation methodologies.
* A limited access multilingual '''Virtual Research Environment (VRE)'''  offers authors of the wikis a secure platform for exchanging scientific information. In the '''repository of the VRE''' you can find, for example, analysis data, physical and chemical constants, and also graphics, photos, short videos and unpublished literature. The use of the ''Digital Object Identifier'' provides a permanent and reliable means of citing deposited data, that is as serious as references to printed literature, videos and unpublished literature.
Since February 2009, support from the German Research Foundation has made it possible for this to be carried out at the Hornemann Institute<ref>http://www.hornemann-institut.de/english/whats_new.php (accessed January 1, 2011) </ref> of the HAWK<ref>http://www.hawk-hhg.de/preservation/default.php (accessed January 1, 2011) </ref> (University of Applied Sciences and Arts) in Hildesheim, Germany.
Become a SaltWiki author<ref  name=author>[http://elearn.hawk-hhg.de/projekte/salzwiki/pages/author-registration.php Author Registration]</ref> or a member of the research network.
Save your scientific data and take advantage of other data sets in the repository. If you have comments to make on particular pages, please log in and write your comments directly on the discussion page that is located on each SaltWiki page.
If you have any general questions about SaltWiki or comments, please [[special:contact|get in touch]] with us.
