Introduction

Damages caused by salts are among the most common and relevant processes inducing damage to historic buildings in porous inorganic building materials such as stone and brick, and are particularly deteriorating to wall paintings. To identify the origin and nature of these are salts, and understand how they react with water in different climates, is crucial in order to take effective measures. The origin of the salts is critical as this is paramount in developing measures to counteract their effect.
