I would rather call this article Parameters for Moisture Measurement
Author: Hans-Jürgen Schwarz
back to Moisture Maybe rather Material Moisture Content?
Key parameters
Commonly used parameters are:
- Mass related moisture content
- Volume related moisture content
- Saturation humidity: maximum capillary moisture content /absorption at atmospheric pressure or vacuum (by immersion)
- Equilibrium moisture content: moisture absorption due to hygroscopicity
- Maximum degree of pore filling
- Hygroscopicity related degree of pore filling
Parameter | Equation | Explanation |
Mass related material moisture content um in [M%] |
mW = Mass of water sorbed by the sample in [g] mF = Mass of the humid sample in [g] at sample collection mT = Mass of the dry sample in [g] (from the moment of drying up to a constant weight)
Volume related material moisture content uv in [Vol%] |
VW = Volume of the water sorbed by the sample in [cm³] VT = Volume of the dry sample at sample collection in [cm³] um = Mass related moisture content in [M.%] T = Density of the dry sample in [g/cm³] W = Density of the water in [g/cm³]
Saturation humidity of a material us in [M%] |

TeX parse error: Double subscripts: use braces to clarify"): {\displaystyle u_{S}={\frac {m_{F}_{S}-m_{T}}{m_{T}}}\cdot 100} | mFS = Mass of the moisture saturated sample [g] mT = Mass of the dry sample in [g] |
Hygroscopicity related equilibrium moisture content of a material uA in [M%] |
Failed to parse (Conversion error. Server ("https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_") reported: "Cannot get mml. TeX parse error: Double subscripts: use braces to clarify"): {\displaystyle u_{A}={\frac {m_{F}_{A}-m_{T}}{m_{T}}}\cdot 100} | mFA = Mass of a sample after hygroscopic moisture absorption mT = Mass of the dry sample in [g] |
Total degree of pore filling PFGG in [M%] | um = Mass related moisture content in M.% us = Saturation humidity in [M%]
Hygroscopicity related degree of pore filling PFGH in [M%] |
] | uA = Hygroscopicity related equilibrium moisture content in M.% us = Saturation moisture content in [M%] |
